Photograph of performers from a minstrel show at Steger Hall in Steger, Illinois in 1917. Nine are wearing blackface. Minstrel shows were a form of theater popularized in the mid-1800s that featured white actors in blackface makeup depicting negative stereotypes of Black Americans. The popularity of these acts began diminishing in the early 1900s and fell out of popularity completely during the Civil Rights Movement.
